Villopoto Wins His Third Overall at Red Bud

6/05/2006

Buchanan, MI (July 2, 2006) - Ryan Villopoto won his third AMA Toyota National Motocross overall in front of a very large holiday crowd at the Red Bud MX Park.

As the gate dropped in moto one, Villopoto jumped out to the lead and immediately began laying down extremely fast lap times as he inched away from the field. RV eventually crossed the line 12 seconds ahead of second place finisher, Andrew McFarlane. "After I got the holeshot, I had a clear track ahead of me and I just rode as hard as I could," said Villopoto.

The second moto saw Josh Grant rocket out to the gate to grab the holeshot. Grant led for two laps before problems dropped him back to seventh. This left the door open for Mike Alessi to move into the number one spot. Meanwhile, moto one winner, Villopoto was on the move after a poor start. Once into second, RV cruised to the checkers, knowing his 1-2 finishes would top Alessi's 3-1 score on the day.

Also making a splash on the AMA Toyota National Motocross circuit was the long awaited arrival of Ben Townley. After missing the entire supercross season due to reconstructive knee surgery, Townley showed up to Red Bud with some serious speed. While battling with several riders for top five positions in moto one, Townley went down and ended up eighth. The second moto provided a glimpse of more to come from Townley as he followed Villopoto through the pack, on his way to a third place finish for moto two and a fifth overall on the weekend.

Ricky Carmichael jumped out of the gate the quickest and grabbed the holeshot in moto one of the motocross division. Right behind him was James Stewart, Chad Reed, Davi Millsaps and the rest of the burly 450cc machines. Despite the crowd's eager anticipation of a showdown between the top three, Carmichael pulled a huge lead over Stewart while Stewart had a big lead over Reed.

Moto two began the same way as the first, with Carmichael grabbing the holeshot and Stewart right behind. Reed on the other hand, began the moto around seventh and spent the first few laps of the moto working his way up to an eventual third place finish.
