Villopoto Stays Consistent
1/15/2007
Janesville, WI -Round two of the Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross Series kicked off in front of 44,953 fans in Phoenix, AZ. Chad Reed managed to work through the pain to earn another respectable third place finish while Ryan Villopoto fought back from a poor start for second in the Lites Main Event.
After going down while leading his heat race, Villopoto squeaked into the main with the final transfer position. With a less than stellar gate pick, RV came out of the gate outside the top five while his teammate and eventual winner, Christophe Pourcel grabbed the lead by the second corner and never looked back. Meanwhile, RV and Chris Gosselaar began picking off opponents one by one and by the seventh lap, RV was sitting in second and Gosselaar in fourth. During the final lap, Gosselaar moved into third to make it a Monster Energy Pro Circuit podium sweep.
The Supercross Main Event began with a rarely issued "Red Flag" after three laps due to a David Vuillemin crash. On the second start, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed soon found their way to the front. Once out front, Reed found a pace he was comfortable with and finished a distant but respectable third place while Carmichael and Stewart battled it out for several laps before Stewart made a pass that stuck. Ivan Tedesco managed to finish a respectable seventh after riding with an injured hand.
Going into Anaheim 2, Carmichael begins semi-retirement while Reed sits 10 points behind Stewart.
