Villopoto Garners First-Ever National Win

5/30/2006

Mt. Morris, PA (May 28, 2006) - Near perfect weather provided great racing at the second round of the AMA Toyota National Motocross Series at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA over Memorial weekend.

Rookie, Ryan Villopoto grabbed his first outdoor victory with 2-1 moto finishes and moved to second in overall standings. Villopoto's teammate, Grant Langston soldiered to 4-4 moto finishes for a fourth overall. Chad Reed came away with second overall via 2-2 finishes in the Motocross class. Reed's second place finishes moved him into second place in overall point standings.

The first Lites moto saw Parts Unlimited and THOR rider, Chris Gosselaar grab the holeshot. On lap two, Goose slipped back to second only to pull off shortly after when he caught his leg in a hole, which forced him out of contention. For most of the race, the running order was Josh Grant, Langston, and Mike Alessi up front with Villopoto charging hard. With four laps to go, Grant went down and handed the lead over to Langston. A half lap later, Langston went down and Alessi took the lead. Villopoto benefited from the downed riders and finished an impressive second place after charging through the field from a bad start.

James Stewart grabbed the holeshot in moto one of the Motocross class. Shortly after, Ricky Carmichael took over the lead with Stewart in tow. As the two pulled away from the rest of the field in a close battle, Reed quietly circulated in third. With four laps to go, Stewart went down hard off a tricky step-down and ended his day with a ride to the hospital. THOR's, Josh Demuth put in an impressive ride and finished seventh.

Lites moto two had Andrew Short out front with Villopoto, Langston and Grant in pursuit. First moto winner - Alessi - went down in the third corner, ending his chances for an overall. By the fifth lap, Villopoto was in second and set sights on Short. With four laps to go, Villopoto reeled in Short and moved into the lead. By checkers, it was Villopoto, Short, Grant and Langston in fourth.

Nick Wey grabbed the holeshot in the second Motocross moto but was quickly overtaken by Carmichael. Carmichael immediately began pulling away, while Reed spent the first few laps working his way into second. With Carmichael way out front, Reed was able to settle into second. At the end of the day, Reed took second overall and moved into second in points.
