Team USA wins Motocross of Nations

9/24/2006

Janesville, WI - Team USA consisting of James Stewart, THOR stars, Ryan Villopoto and Ivan Tesdesco, have won the 60th edition of the historic Motocross of Nations ahead of Teams Belgium and New Zealand.

In spite of threatening weather, a record breaking attendance of over 60.000 patriotic fans flocked to the Matterly Basin Circuit in the UK to see the Americans claim their 17th title and rewrite the history books as the most successful motocross nation in this event.

Newly crowned AMA Motocross Lites champion, Ryan Villopoto, impressed the masses with his solid 3-2 performance which was closely followed by New Zealand's Ben Townley (5-3), handing the Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki duo 1st and 2nd in the individual MX2 classifications.

With Belgian Stefan Everts dominating both moto's over James Stewart in an impressive final moto duel, Ivan Tedesco's 6-9 result was enough to put TEAM USA on top of the box as 'Hot sauce' stepped in at the last minute to replace an injured Ricky Carmichael.

The Motocross of Nations will move to Budds Creek, Maryland for 2007 where TEAM USA will be even harder to beat on home soil.

Ryan Villopoto: "You know I got a good starts and came out with the trophy. I was behind Ivan in our second race and jumped off the track. I kind of regrouped and everyone was going fast. I made a mistake in that race - it was just a racing mistake. On a jump you can lay it over, but I just laid it over too far and I was lucky I didn't go down. I couldn't have done it without my team. I think it was great! There were a ton of people out there - what an awesome feeling! It was mine and James's first experience, so I hope to do it again next year."

Ivan Tedesco: "I got a good start like I wanted and tried to do as many laps as I could. I haven't raced much so I did the best I could. I fell in the last race but it was good enough for the team. These guys did a good job and it was a great weekend for me. We had a handle on it. This is the biggest race of the year and an honor to race this race. Everyone believed in me, and I am glad to be part of it."

Ben Townley: "It was a really good day for us. I had two really good starts in both moto's and had a great race with some pretty fast guys. I think we were pretty lucky to get the starts today on our MX2 bikes and we were up front in both moto's right from the beginning and that made life easier for sure. It was awesome to come back here. I knew this event was going to be big and I couldn't wait to come here. Even though I was injured on the couch for most of the year I knew I would make it back for this event. It has been cool to see all the fans. Last years Nations was great but this year has been even better and obviously with our team being up on the podium. This is something I've always dreamed of: standing on the podium, holding the New Zealand flag. It's been great to have achieved that."
