Langston Wins Second AMA Supercross Lites Championship, Reed Ties Championship With One Remaining
5/1/2006
Seattle, WA (April 29, 2006) — Despite afternoon storms and mushy track conditions, Grant Langston won his second Supercross Lites championship in front of 46,896 enthusiastic fans during the fifteenth round of the AMA Amp'd Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
Langston came into Seattle four points down and by the end of the night he walked away with the main event win and eight points ahead as the newly crowned Western Regional Supercross Lites Champion. The Supercross division saw Chad Reed put in another consistent ride with a second place finish which brings him and Ricky Carmichael into the final round in Las Vegas tied at 316 points each.
The Supercross main event had Stewart grab the holeshot and immediately began pulling away. Reed worked his way into second rather quickly and distanced himself from third place but couldn't close the gap on Stewart's sizeable lead. As first and second place were secured, all eyes were on Carmichael as he charged through the field from a mid pack start. After a scary off-track excursion, Carmichael settled down and began charging to an eventual third place finish.
When the gate dropped at the start of the Lites main event, all eyes were on Langston and points leader, Andrew Short. Mike Alessi surprised everyone as he grabbed the holeshot from the outside, but was quickly taken over by last weeks winner, Ryan Villopoto. Shortly after, Villopoto moved over and allowed Langston by. "I didn't want to get in Grant's way since he was battling for the championship and all," said Villopoto. "Once he got past, he checked out pretty quickly so I don't know if I would have been able to hold him off, anyway." Meanwhile, Short worked his way into fourth before going down and eventually finishing well out of contention in eighth place.
Tune into Speed Channel May 6, 2006 at 10:00 p.m. EST to witness the "Perfect Storm" between Reed, Carmichael and Stewart. With Reed and Carmichael tied and Stewart only five points behind, anything can happen. Adding to the excitement will be the East/West Lites Shootout between Western Region Lites Champion, Grant Langston and Eastern Region Lites Champion, Davi Millsaps.
